HST Podcast Final Take: Feb 23rd
You won’t find a much bigger Daryl Morey fan than myself. I didn’t join the Morey party when he made the Harden and Howard deals. No bandwagon jumping from this guy.
What he has done over the last few years is downright amazing. But even the best General Managers make mistakes and Daryl had one of his biggest blunders rubbed right in his face recently against the Suns. He chose not to invest 4 years at 7.5 million a year in Goran Dragic. The 4th year was a player option and, with no superstar, he didn’t want to be locked in, or so he thought.
Instead, he spent just a little more money but with only 3 years guaranteed on Jeremy Lin.
The Result: Dragic is a borderline All-Star and Lin remains an extremely inconsistent bench player. Dragic plays better defense, is not a turnover machine like Lin, is a way better shooter from two & three point range and just put on an exhibition against Morey’s Rockets. Dragic had 35 in 40 minutes and Lin had 2 in 20. Yes, the mistake looks as clear as day.
But as Daryl very well knows, even the best Poker players play the wrong hand every now and then.
