I’m just as guilty as many of you Kevin McHale-Haters out there. I’ve taken my shots at him for in-game X’s & O’s, poor use of the bench, and, of course, the Rockets defensive deficiencies.
But… was I devasted when he was brought back for next year? Not really.
Am I convinced he’s the next Phil, Pop or Pat Riley? Of course not.
But let’s look at his positives before we all bury the guy. His work with Dwight made the big guy better. Yes, Howard got help from Dream but he’d spent time with Hakeem before & this was not the result. Overall, the team & their biggest project improved as the season went along.
His players love him and that matters. Not just with the team but it helps the franchise’s rep around the league which, as we’re seeing in this Kevin Love situation, is a huge part in drawing championship level players.
How ‘bout some patience? Championship players aren’t assembled in a day so why the expectation with coaches? You’re not expected to be the best person in the world at your job in 2 or 3 years. Are you?
What do I need to see from McHale next year? Let’s see a little James Harden accountability. When your most important player isn’t doing what he’s supposed to do, don’t be afraid to have a tight leash. Don’t wait too long to react. You can ask Gary Kubiak about that.
