Is Justin Forsett the answer for the Texans?

Could a reunion between the Houston Texans and Justin Forsett be in the cards?

Justin ForsettThe Baltimore Ravens released Justin Forsett this week, which has led to speculation about where he could land, and more importantly who needs a veteran running back for the remainder of the season?

Lamar Miller is on target for nearly 400 carries in 2016 after carrying the ball just over 600 times in his first 3 seasons in Miami. While Miller was brought in by the Texans to be their feature back, he needs help.

Additionally, you want your feature back to be healthy for the critical months of November, December and hopefully all of January.

At this stage, it would be surprising if Lamar Miller can walk properly come January.

A proven back such as Justin Forsett would be the perfect option for Houston with his ability to explode for some big plays, good catching skills and importantly if Miller gets injured or needs to rest, can perform as a 3 down back.

While Forsett struggled in the first few games for Baltimore this season, he has been working behind an offensive line with two rookies which means those open lanes he found both last year and in 2014 when he was a pro-bowler have evaporated.

Averaging a measly 3.3 yards per carry may not seem appealing, but with Lamar Miller only average 3.8, it’s not as if you lose a whole lot. Besides, your not going to find any solid running backs available to pick up averaging over 4 yards per carry.

Forsett has averaged 4.8 yars per carry over his 102 game career on 764 snaps, so despite being 30 he has had the same amount of carries as Lamar Miller. Importantly for Texan fans, in 2012 when he played a single season with the team he average 5.9 yards per carry playing with a steady QB in Matt Schaub, backing up Arian Foster.

Forsett has played this role before. If the Texans want to improve their run game and be better placed for a playoff assault, it’s time he does it here in Houston again.
