The Katy Tiger baseball team came into the season unranked in the state. After an 18 game winning streak to start the season, they’re now the 2nd ranked 6A team in Texas & maybe one of the biggest surprises in the nation—but the guys in red aren’t surprised at all. In this Fox Sports Southwest High School Spotlight feature, our own Robert Land looks at Katy baseball’s 18 game winning streak to start the season & how they’ve jumped into the national top 25.
The offense starts with 5 regulars who are hitting over .400, including catcher Matt Solomon who leads the team in RBI’s & leadoff hitter Hayden Baker, who’s hitting .500 with 15 stolen bases. Then there’s the defense up the middle led by either Baker or Hayden Ebrecht at 2B & JJ Padilla at shortstop. They’ve already turned more double plays then they did all of last year.
Senior Dane Haveman is the #1 starter on a pitching staff with a near 2 ERA. Their #2 pitcher Garrett Doiron is also the starting quarterback on the state & national champion football team. He brings some of that leadership over to the diamond.
